This is one of my favorite weeks of the year because it’s almost perfectly designed to allow time to reflect on the year, reassess goals and plan what’s next. 2011 was the year that I really set aside some time to try to make this blog something other than a diversion. Throughout this week, I intend to share some of the most popular content and a few collections of my favorite posts that didn’t necessarily get much attention. I hope your 2011 was healthy and productive and here’s wishing you a fulfilling 2012.
Most Popular Posts of 2011
5. gq august 2011: the comedy issue with mila kunis, alison brie and gillian jacobs.
Let’s just say I’m not surprised that a post with a title including “gq mila kunis” received a lot of Google traffic.
4. 50 years of paul newman & joanne woodward.
I filter through thousands of images to find what I post here. This collection of shots of Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward were probably my favorite of the year. I’m glad others were able to find their way to it.
3. lego volkswagen t1 camper van 10220 time lapse build.
The LEGO VW stop motion video post represents the largest single chunk of time I sunk into the blog this year. It’s safe to say that I underestimated both the time it would require and the reception it would receive. What started as a nostalgic homage to my old VW bus turned into YouTube front page real estate, a Gizmodo feature and 230,000+ views. No regrets.
2. observations: espn magazine the body issue.
Again, not a big surprise that “hope solo body issue” was one of the most popular ways Googlers found their way to my corner of the internet. Isn’t it amazing how much on the net has changed, but how it’s still basically a place we go to get our jollies? ESPN’s Body Issue has become their answer to Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue, but I do appreciate that they don’t exclusively select attractive women to feature. They continue to offer some of the most interesting bodies in sports, not just the curviest.
1. michael symon: cook like an iron chef.
This one was a surprise. I would not have guessed that a short diatribe on the state of the Food Network and a review of Michael Symon’s show would be the most popular thing I wrote this year. However, thanks to Chef Symon’s extremely likable disposition and his loyal following, his Facebook mention of my post sent an avalanche of traffic my way. I stand by what I wrote, including the scathing opinions on the bulk of the current line-up of Food Network personalities. It was, however, an important reminder that anything you broadcast should be written from the perspective that it could be read by anyone/everyone, including those about which you are writing.
Listening to Louis C.K. is a joy. He’s just so damn frank about everything. It’s really, really refreshing to hear someone with his influence and level of success strip away the veneer of showbiz and explain how it actually works, how the money is made and how he creates content.
By now, you’ve surely heard about his newest comedy special and how/why he decided to produce it himself and sell it for $5 on louisck.com with the fewest restrictions possible. I love having an option to support an artist in such a direct manner and am very pleased that’s he’s done well with this model. Hopefully others will be inspired to do the same.
Regarding the special, here’s another example of Louis’ openness about the whole thing: Louis relinquishes the power of exclusive of information and lays out the numbers on his marketing ‘experiment’.
It’s all very exciting, more so because it’s coming from an artist that I love. (See my post on HBO’s Talking Funny & his FX show Louie and in my September Simply KC column).
He did a great interview with Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air this week and also just did a two-part B.S. Report with Bill Simmons…it ranks among the best episodes Bill’s done to date.
Go buy the special, it’ll be the best $5 you spend today: Louis C.K. Comedy Special
He even throws in DVD box cover and disc art in high-res PDF form in case you have people on your gift list stuck in the analog world.
Here are a few deleted scenes (probably NSFW, depending on your W):

Also, here is a short piece written by Joan Rivers about Louis for the December GQ Men of the Year issue: Louis C.K. Comic Genius.

The August issue of GQ is their annual comedy issue and this year they’ve spotlighted some of our MM Blog favorites. Mila Kunis is on the cover and her Q&A is pretty entertaining.

I’ve lauded the cast of NBC’s Community here before and was pleased to see Alison Brie and Gillian Jacobs also featured prominently in this issue. Those ladies are super funny and their throwback faux pin-up video is a nice accompaniment to the article.
