I love The Black Keys. I love their staunch support of Akron, OH. I love that the El Camino album cover above features their beat-up tour van. My appreciation for their music is well-documented (here, here, here), but I’ve had El Camino on repeat all week. You’ll have no trouble identifying it as a Black Keys album, but it’s a bit of a departure from the soulfulness of Brothers. It scurries back into the embrace of that harder dirty bluesy rock sound they do so well. Throw on some cans and see what you think.

Here are the first two singles from the album:

The Black Keys – El Camino – Lonely Boy

The Black Keys – El Camino – Gold On The Ceiling

They’ve been playing both of these on the late night circuit this week. The Gold On The Ceiling performance on Letterman was the standout for me.

Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues – Montezuma

There’s something about this album that keeps drawing me back in. I liked the Fleet Foxesdebut album, but I wouldn’t consider them a favorite band and they don’t immediately come to mind when I’m in the mood for music. However, I’ve now listened to Helplessness Blues over a dozen times and enjoy it more each time. See what you think.

They’re playing Cain’s on Sep. 17 with The Walkmen. That’s definitely a show I could be talked into attending. For those lucky souls headed down to Austin for the ACL Festival this year, they’re playing there the next night, Sept. 18.

My Morning Jacket - Circuital

It seems that with each album, My Morning Jacket gets more esoteric, Jim James’ vocals get a little higher-pitched and a few more tracks border on weird. Circuital is another step in that direction. My friend Gabe and I were discussing the progression of My Morning Jacket albums over Father’s Day BBQ, and we agreed that it seems the handful of really great tracks from each album sound like they belong on It Still Moves (See “I’m Amazed” on Evil Urges). The more they push the envelope, the farther it takes them from what I like. With that being said, if they continue to put out albums with at least some songs I enjoy, who am I to complain? I really like My Morning Jacket and I really like Jim James’ side project Monsters of Folk. I’m excited to see them on August 3rd at the Uptown.
