Here’s a little animation project I put together this weekend using a LEGO Star Wars Imperial V-wing Starfighter 7915 set. I know there are many amazing video editing tools out there, especially for Mac, but I wanted to explore what’s possible using exclusively free open source software and the embedded Windows 7 tools. My only other element used was a sub $10 macro light box featured on Lifehacker.

I learned a few things about lighting, camera settings and what’s required to produce fluid movement. Stay tuned for a more ambitious production coming in the next few weeks that’s more in line with the theme around here…

Critical Miss Gaming Society’s campaign for real Monopoly:

Monopoly is shared culture, a common element that weaves together our modern world. But when was the last time you played it…it’s boring and lacks skill. Actually, you just have to play it the way it was designed to be played. You just have to read the…rules.

She goes on to point out that most everyone who plays Monopoly omits a critical portion of the rules that actually makes gameplay quite a bit more strategic (and fun):

BUYING PROPERTY…Whenever you land on an unowned property you may buy that property from the Bank at its printed price. You receive the Title Deed card showing ownership; place it face up in front of you.

If you do not wish to buy the property, the Banker sells it at auction to the highest bidder. The buyer pays the Bank the amount of the bid in cash and receives the Title Deed card for that property. Any player, including the one who declined the option to buy it at the printed price, may bid. Bidding may start at any price.

This is huge. I can’t believe I’ve never played Monopoly in the correct way. I don’t really care if this correct version causes more opportunities for strife amongst the players. It’s better. Spread the word.

Video game publisher TECMO KOEI AMERICA has officially announced a remake of Tecmo Super Bowl (SNES)-one of the most influential football games of all time. The new reincarnation developed by Southend Interactive will be released as TECMO BOWL®THROWBACK and will maintain all of the classic gameplay in addition to fresh new features that modernizes the franchise. TECMO BOWL THROWBACK will be released on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®Network only in North America in Spring 2010. Tecmo Bowl fans no longer have to reminisce about the old days as players can return to the first video game that emulated real football with new generation consoles, twenty years after its release. As a game that still holds a strong community following, online community tournaments can now be held nationwide at the comfort of home.

Features:
TECMO BOWL THROWBACK brings back the gameplay you loved, and stays true to the Tecmo Super Bowl legacy!
* Online Multiplayer: Find your old buddies online and challenge them to matches just like back in the day
* 2D + 3D Graphics: Experience all new 3D graphics with the ability to switch to the classic 2D style!
* Customizable Teams and Rosters: Play as any of the 32 teams with customizable team names and rosters in full seasons
* Online Leaderboards: Compare your stats in a wide array of online leaderboards
* Classic Game Modes: Battle it out with your friends and kick off a game in Preseason, Season or Pro Bowl modes

**One complaint:** One of the coolest things about old games like Tecmo Super Bowl and RBI Baseball was that you could play with the actual players from that year…like a time capsule. If it weren’t for these games, there’s no way I could still rattle off the entire ’88 Detroit Lineup or recall who kicked for Chicago in ’91. It’s disappointing that this throwback edition of the game will contain only fictional characters. The reason? “Madden has bought all the rights to NFL team and player names.” Boo!
